Artist’s Statement

I am a hand-builder. In the world of clay, this means that I create all of my work without the use of a potter’s wheel. For me, the process and challenge of creating functional, three-dimensional forms out of flat slabs of clay provides endless delight and opportunity. Form follows function, but a merely functional form is insufficient. I don’t just make a mug or a teapot or a bowl that is functional, my goal is to turn those forms into sculptures. As I consider form and surface, I am influenced by the idea that “delight lies between boredom and confusion.” (Ernst Gombrich, Flight of Fancy) Always in my work I am looking to find that place where both form and surface decoration moves away from boredom, but lives just this side of chaos.”
